HTC TROPHY REVIEWS AND SPECS

Introduction:
Last of the major domestic players to get into the game with Windows Phone 7, Verizon Wireless can now offer their customers the new experience in Microsoft’s platform with the HTC Trophy. Although it’s essentially a 6-month-old model at this point, its $149.99 on-contract price point is just a tad below the usual spot we find most high caliber smartphones at nowadays, but it’s also a world phone as well. Considering that this is Verizon's WP7 launch handset, let’s see if it can entice customers!

Design:
Somewhat of a bummer, there’s nothing special with the HTC Trophy since its design is an exact facsimile to the European version that we reviewed – though, it sports a red theme internally. Clearly, it doesn’t quite embody the eye catching industrial design that we associate with HTC’s stable.

From the looks of it, the handset retains its distinguishable 3.8” WVGA (480 x 800) Super LCD display with support for 16.7 million colors. Easily, it’s by far one of the better display panels we’ve seen in use with HTC’s line of WP7 smartphones, thanks to its sharp details and deep production of iridescent colors.

As for the rest of the device, we find everything else in its usual location on its side. In the rear, you have a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash and speaker grill. Meanwhile, removing its back cover offers access to its 1,300 mAh battery and SIM card slot.
iPad 2 Giveaway and Smartphone Sweepstakes

Trophy 1
4G is all the rage.  Part marketing term, part new technology, it's available in some form at all four of the nationwide carriers.  But despite the heavy advertising, there are still some great 3G smartphones out there.

The HTC Trophy is Verizon's first Windows Phone device, and another smartphone in their lineup that has global roaming capabilities.  At $149.99 with a two-year agreement, it's priced well given its feature set, and should be included in the mix for anyone trying to choose between one of Verizon's high-end 3G smartphones.

After a weekend of using it on the road, a few first impressions:
The HTC Trophy looks good.  The black plastic, combined with the red color tones behind the camera grille and chrome around the display, give it a premium feel.  The overall design closely resembles AT&T's HTC Surround, just without the external speaker.
Trophy has a 3.8-inch display, giving it substance without making it feel too big.  At 4.94 ounces, it fits into a pocket with ease, and the dimensions place it on par with Apple's iPhone 4.
It comes with the latest version of Windows Phone 7 that enables copy and paste, but beyond that, it's the same Windows Phone experience, with the usual apps like Microsoft Office, XBOX LIVE, HTC Hub, and Netflix.

Trophy 2

The 5-megapixel camera works really well, and as I've said in the past, I love how easy the app is to operate.  Images look nice, and having a physical camera button is a huge plus as well.  For those that love to shoot video, Trophy has 720p HD recording capabilities, and overall, I've been impressed with how the videos have turned out.
Signal strength has been relatively good, though I've noticed that it doesn't perform as well as competing devices like the Motorola DROID X2.  When testing it in an area with poor Verizon service, the DROID X2 had one bar of service and was clear while the HTC Trophy struggled to maintain the call.  Earpiece volume is exceptionally loud, though - it's one of the few devices that I can keep at a volume lower than the maximum.
The Trophy is an EVDO Rev. A (3G) device, so as you would expect, data speeds are considerably slower when comparing to WiMAX, HSPA+, and LTE.  It's noticeable when browsing the web or downloading apps.

Trophy 3

Powered by a 1,300 mAh battery, the Trophy struggles to make it through a full day with moderate use including calling, text messaging, and browsing the web.  I'll never understand why HTC places anything less than a 1,500 mAh battery in their smartphones, but here's to hoping that extended battery options will be available soon.

All in all, the HTC Trophy is a great addition to Verizon's smartphone lineup, and at $149.99, should be considered along with other 3G options like the HTC DROID Incredible 2 and Motorola DROID X2.  Stay tuned for more coverage on Verizon's first Windows Phone, and have a look at the unboxing video below!

HTC THUNDERBOLT REVIEWS AND SPECS

NEW YORK — Verizon Wireless says it will start selling its first phone capable of using its new, faster "4G" data network.

The ThunderBolt from HTC Corp. will go on sale Thursday for $250 with a two-year contract. It has a large, 4.3-inch touch screen and runs Google Inc.'s Android software.

Initially, Verizon will be selling it with an unlimited 4G data plan, but spokeswoman Brenda Raney says this option will probably go away later this year, along with the rest of Verizon's unlimited data plans.

Verizon launched its 4G network in December, based on a technology known as Long-Term Evolution, or LTE. But only laptop cards have been available for it. Verizon says customers can expect download speeds of 5 to 12 megabits per second, nearly ten times faster than 3G speeds.

Verizon's 4G network has limited coverage and doesn't carry phone calls, so the phone uses the 3G network as well.

Verizon has said it plans to sell 10 devices for the 4G network by this summer, including phones and tablet computers. Xoom tablets from Motorola Mobility Inc. are already on sale with 3G modems, but it will be possible to upgrade them with 4G modems later this year.

Sprint Nextel Corp. launched its first 4G phone, the HTC Evo 4G, last summer. Its 4G network, run by subsidiary Clearwire Corp., is slower than Verizon's.

T-Mobile USA and AT&T Inc. don't have 4G networks under the common industry definition of the term, but call their 3G networks "4G" where they've been upgraded to higher speeds. They offer speeds similar to Sprint's 4G.

Verizon started to sell the iPhone last month in a 3G version. There's no word on a 4G version.

According to Verizon’s CTO, Verizon’s first 4G LTE phones will launch before the second half of 2011.The HTC Thunderbolt is one of the most-anticipated phones of the year and there have been several signs that the phone would be launched earlier rather than later.

We’ve written about quite a few Verizon Thunderbolt rumored launch dates, but Verizon has yet to announce an official release date. The best Verizon’s said thus far is that LTE phones would launch during the first half of 2011. Verizon CTO Tony Melone spoke at an investors conference and  it appears he tried to downplay any perceived delay of 4G phone launches on the network:

I guess our expectations change, but we had said first half of this year at CES, quite frankly, we think that exceeded people’s expectations. A year ago, people didn’t believe that there would be LTE smartphones in 2011. First half of the year is what we promised, first half of the year is still on track. So we don’t believe there are any new or surprising issues…

And as I said, you are going to see LTE smartphones on the network as promised, before the first half — before the second half of the year, by the end of the second quarter.

In PR/IR speak, that sounds to me like they’re on track for releasing the Thunderbolt and or some other 4G LTE phone on June 30…maybe. Keep in mind that as an executive, Melone is obligated to provide accurate information when he speaks publicly to avoid getting slapped by the SEC for violating disclosure regulations.

The Thunderbolt was originally announced at CES 2011, but Verizon hasn’t announced an official launch date. Since then, there have been several rumors of the Thunderbolt being released soon.

On February 6, Best Buy began taking pre-orders for the device for $50. Thunderbolt commercials from both HTC and Verizon have been airing nationwide and were briefly published on YouTube. Best Buy, the ‘exclusive’ nationwide Thunderbolt retailer also Tweeted an update indicating it would go on sale this month. An HTC rep we spoke to insisted that the Thunderbolt would be launched March 4…or a week later at most. Yesterday, a Verizon slide leaked that showed that the Thunderbolt would have to wait until after the iPad 2 was launched on the network. Verizon and Best Buy reps have also taken their best guesses at when the Thunderbolt will go on sale.

So far, Verizon has been pretty quiet on the issue and continues to try and keep a lid on the Thunderbolt release date rumors. The company’s even gone as far asking Thunderbolt fans to move on to other topics.

I can understand if Verizon needs more time to work on its 4G network before unleashing the Thunderbolt on it, but why run commercials three or four months early? And why oh why would you want to launch the Thunderbolt in the same time frame as the iPhone 5?
